THE PARALLEL UNIVERSE

The Festival of Thump we hosted back in March was devoted to the four stroke, single piston engine and its adherents, and the thumper community showed up in throngs, all sporting engines similar in form but very different in execution. Given all the folks who had gathered in sameness of purpose it was extremely hard to categorize anyone in the crowd as being very much alike. If there was one thing these people shared in common, it was that they were having an absolute blast being around motorbikes. The Parallel Universe Motorcycle Festival last weekend was a show dedicated to motorcycles exhibiting identically arranged two-cylinder engines. And again the incredibly diverse range of bikes that showed up and the distinctly … View More

LA-to-AUSTIN

Four-hundred and fifty-two hours is how long Google Maps said it was going to take us to walk the 1,393 miles to The One Motorcycle Show in Austin, Texas.  We didn’t have that sort of time, or the right shoes, so we drove the “Doose Goose” instead, loaded with a couple bikes for the show. A German 1000cc beast of complicated simplicity from the hands of Woolie, and a speed demon named SPIKE, crafted from the fingers of the one and only Shinya Kimura. We also brought the shop “grocery getter” to add some two wheeled miles and adventures to the trip. Arriving safely and a bit early to Austin, the Revival Cycles crew greeted us with open arms as … View More

SOUND & VISION REDUX – THE VIDEO

Taking Shape

Woolie’s hands have been full in recent months with special, one-off, bespoke motorcycle builds for a handful of loyal Deus customers. But inside the cauldron of Woolie’s Workshop, another force has been stewing and picking up energy: The KTM Project. The goal of this initiative is to offer two, repeatable, custom Deus motorcycles based off two different KTMs that can be assembled in any Deus shop around the globe. Eating dirt for breakfast, the 500 EXC will be an adventure inspired dual sport with optional surf rack, while the 690 Duke will push the boundries of street performance. The project is shaping up. The smell is wafting thru the Emporium and making our mouths water like mamma’s chocolate chip cookies. … View More

Sound and Vision Redux

The sun shined brightly, the grinding bite of winter was no longer aloft, and the parking lot at The Emporium of Postmodern Activities blossomed with vintage film, hi-fi, and vinyl. Through the eyes of a casual observer it appeared as if another Saturday flea market was taking place, but for the informed who had gathered, there was reason to celebrate, for the season of Sound and Vision had arrived. Despite the ravages of the long, hard, Southern California winter, this year’s harvest proved to be just as crisp, rich, fresh, and delicious as the last, as the stalls overflowed with an abundance of formerly high tech offerings. While the people perused, entertainment came courtesy of Deus Ex Machina’s own with … View More

WOOLIE’S WORKSHOP + BMW GROUP DESIGN

To provide you with a small taste of the great things to come at The Emporium of Postmodern Activities, we turn to the amazing adventures of the man behind Woolie’s Workshop. Last week, after receiving a formal invitation, Woolie led Deus Ex Machina’s corps d’elite to the German state of Bavaria for a day-long meeting at BMW’s Headquarters in Munich to discuss the building of custom motorcycles with top-ranking officials of the BMW Group Design department. In attendance were Ola Stenegärd, who designed BMW’s HP2 and S1000RR models; Ola’s boss, Edgar Heinrich, who led the design for the R1150GS and R1200GS; and the big boss, the man who oversees it all, the Michelangelo of car design, Director of BMW Group Design, … View More

Apre a Milano Deus Ex Machina

Deus’ next big milestone – Italy. With the official launch of Milan looming around the corner, the boys over in Italy couldn’t help them selves, last week on the 15th they decided to open their door and invite a select few to take in the new flagship which will act as a hub and service the rest of Europe. The soft launch provided onlookers with a night of deus knowledge, Dare Jennings flew over from Australia to take centre stage with Federico and Antonio Colombo from Cinelli giving plenty of insight into Deus Italy. With so many incredible bikes, fixtures and art in the showroom. The guests were as eager as kids in a candy store, moving from one attraction to … View More

Top Gear Fest – Thats a wrap!

So another action packed weekend has come to pass. We now have time to catch our breath again. With the Top Gear Festival in full swing, the Deus crew was flat out battling the 30+ degree temps over the two days out at the Sydney Motorsport Park. With a full featured stand, including a NASA Airstream Van, The Chev truck, 2 Corvettes and of course 15 odd bikes, Deus had a huge presence across the entire venue, enough so that Captain Slow (James May) decided to beat the heat under our stand while oggling over the beautiful works of metal and rubber. As the festival provided more events and attractions than one could poke a stick at including, Webber setting a new … View More

Build Diaries | Matt Cuddihy’s Scorpio – Stage 2

Following on from Stage 1:- “After a lot of sparks Jeremy welded up the new tank and seat mounts as well as the surf rack and a special request for an old Ammunitions tin I found to store my lunch and other goodies. We decided to put different sprockets on the bike for some highway gearing so the 225 can keep up with the highway traffic for the long trip home.” Photographed by Thomas Walk
