Catching up with Husni Part 3

If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to have visited this corner of Java you’d know it’s not your typical Indonesia surf scene. For one thing the place is very light on when it comes to egos, and competitive personas. There’s none of those stereotypical machos surfers, it’s a life less complicated and perhaps one could say, even less sophisticated, if you get my drift. Instead what you come across is the sort of place where you feel like you have taken a step or two back in time. This surf community has nourished itself on the people who live here. This might be surfer’s who grew up there or one’s who have found this little bit of paradise and decided … View More

Catching up with Husni Part 2

Down time between surfs gave me the time to suss out what it is that Husni, Mencos and the other guys were into when their not in the water. I got to listen to them playing sweet melodies on the guitar and watching them paint. I also got to see them play with their bikes. It’s hard not to notice the Honda cb100, c90 and c70 or vespers cruising around, they are bloody everywhere. The temptation to jump aboard and fang along the beach is like an itch you cant scratch. So it should come as a surprise to anyone that after half an hour we were. Once i pulled the cameras out of my bag and start snappin, they … View More

Catching up with Husni Part 1

With Salsa departing Bali for a little Mexico soirée, and a slice of time before the arrive of Ozzie Wright and co. My work commitments opened up presenting me with a little hole to go exploring. Where to go…I checked the swell report and noticed a nice little pulse feeding into West Java. What a perfect opportunity to catch up with Husni and the rest of guys in Batukaras. So I packed my bag and grabbed Andre, our man behind the lens of the motion pieces we produce and set off on the unfortunately long and rather convoluted trip to that spot on the coast over a thousand miles away. Arriving first thing in the morning it was fantastic to … View More

Mother Load

Not sure why but it’s been an amped 5 day weekend in Bali. Super crazy with things on most days and nights. One really big punctuation point in all that’s gone on and going on was a little multifaceted fest we held here at the Temple in Canggu on Friday night. After a week in the art shed out back, Ozzie Wrong, adorned the walls of the Deus Gallery with some colourful treats. Acid Rainbow Flower. So yummy that in fact that all of them were snapped up, toot sweet. Perhaps not our first sold out show, it would definitely have to be the quickest. Comic book style pictures, quick with smart social commentary all priced to go to a … View More

Mencos

Some surfers are born with natural talent, and Mencos is one of these lucky few. Just 22 years old, he’s the current ISC longboard champ, an accolade he has held for the past three years. Born Arif Hidayat, his enthusiasm for surfing is off the charts, and his relentless energy drives him to keep trying new things and develop his unique style. Starting out as a shortboarder, Mencos made the change to longboarding for the simple reason that he found it more satisfying. As any surfer knows, it’s all about the joy you feel when riding the wave, and for Mencos riding a longboard meant he could really express his style. Since then, he has never looked back, and now … View More

Manx Norton

IN 1961, Ron Holyoake got his dream job as a draughtsman at the famous Bracebridge St,  Birmingham offices of Norton Motors LTD. Ron was given one of the hardest jobs he had ever undertaken; to do the “GA” (General Arrangement) drawing of the 1962 30M 500cc Manx Norton “short-stroke” motor, which despite several years of production the “GA” of which had never been done. After three months of retrieving every sub-drawing and component part drawing and turning them into a full size, side and sectional view, accurate to within a few “thou” he was still only three-quarters way through the job. Then the bombshell was dropped; the famous Bracebridge St factory was to close and all the Norton production moved … View More
