Waxball #7 – LEAF productions film

Our friends from LEAF productions put together a fine piece of film capturing Tomorrow’s Tulips and The Abigail’s from the Waxball Diaries Volume #7. An event we sponsored along side REAN Optics, Brixton and Thalia Surf Shop. Keep your eyes open for Volume 8. Should be a kicker!

Misty Mountain Hop

Us- State your full name and birth sign. Him- Jason Robert Salisbury and I’m a Scorpio. Us- Right on, good one.  Us- True or false? Him- True. Us- You were just in New Zealand surfing, traveling, backpacking and filming. What was that like? Him- Mind-blowing. It’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to, also the coldest. There is so much to take in.  It gets a bit overwhelming, some of the things you come across. But, you have to take it all in, its that good of place.  Us- You have been experimenting with Chris Garrett on board designs, like finless and asymmetrical styles. How are you finding they are affecting your surfing? I mean, are the boards pushing you … View More

The Greenroom Festival

The Greenroom Festival once again took over the beautifully restored 19th century red brick Akarenga Soko buildings in Yokohama. The former tax offices, and surrounding area have been made over to offer a unique place to shop and hold events such as this. Deus was invited to participate in this ūber cool festival that has it’s feet firmly planted in all those things we hold near and dear; surf, music and art, so it was a no brainer figuring out if we wanted to attend or not. Our given spot was a recycled shipping container, a 3d blank canvas if you will. We decked it out with printed framed stills from last years ‘Tracking Experience’ hung like a gallery. For … View More

Taking in the Bratstyle

Wasn’t all work and no play while in Japan for last weeks Greenroom Festival. We had a little down time left so rather than resting on our laurels we figured it was an ideal opportunity to drop in on old time friends and like minded individuals over at Bratstyle. It’s no secret that Japanese bike builders were hugely influential to what and who we are. Right back to before the big bang when Deus ex Machina came into being, we’d visit Takamine down at his shop to see what him and the guys were tinkering on. Predominantly builders of choppers (they do an amazing funny chopper) and bobbers they can and have built almost every conceivable variation in-between. Seems they do have … View More

Sunday Mass #2

A little video by Paul Liddle of last Sunday’s Sunday Mass. Come on down every third Sunday to kick some tires and say some hail mary’s and hallelujah’s. Thanks to Brook & River for playing some great tunes.

Sunday Mass : Revelation 2

Looking to build off the buzz created around our first Sunday Mass, we at The Emporium of Postmodern Activities did our best to pull out all the stops for our second afternoon of worship. Trying to recreate the magic, we had Wurstküche sausages firing on the grill, an arsenal of beers on ice, and an impressive congregation of friends and family. Our buddies from Venice Vintage Motorcycle Club, Eastside Moto Babes, the Cretins, and BA Moto all came by sporting their Sunday best. On the musical front, LA’s own Brook and River opened their set with an impressive rendition of Led Zeppelin’s Good Times Bad Times and then charged through an assemblage of tasty originals and solid covers, establishing a … View More

Chairman of the Board

Why is it that just when you think your getting the meter of a man they go and do something that throws the baby out with the dish water? So it is with Chris (AKA  the Phantom) Garrett. The demur shaper has been busy in the back shed and where other shapers might find a vein and work it until all the gold is gone, he has been punching out a plethora of different shapes. One day he’ll be working on a Finless. Next time you poke your head in the door it’s a Poet Warrior he’s carving out of the bloke of foam. Next comes an Equadic, followed by a Gemina, Defluo, Asymmetrical, only to end up at the beginning again. It’s testament to his own … View More

An Erostika Opening

Oh what a night we had… Colorful images of large breasted women fighting, moaning, and beckoning all while riding in hot rods with suped up vibrators. That, was just the art that was hung on the Deus Gallery wall. A Japanese artist who goes by the name Rockin Jelly Bean, who was wearing a jumpsuit and a Mexican wrestling mask, sips Champaign while watching all the onlookers as they got sucked into his sensual and tempting art. Then when the music came a knocking, he answered the door, by jumping on to the stage and belted out ‘Surf Rock-a-Billy’ tunes (some in Japanese) with the Balinese Mad Men ‘The Hydrant’, along with the world’s laziest go-go dancer who travels with … View More

Waxball Vol. 7

We love ourselves a good show here at The Emporium of Postmodern Activities so it was a no brainer when our friends from Thalia Surf Shop, RAEN Optics, and Brixton invited us to participate in the Wax Ball concert series down in Laguna Beach. For this month’s show, The Marine Room was packed to the gunwales with familiar faces, all wearing their biggest smiles and fired up to hear some music. Tomorrows Tulips’ Alex Knost and Christina Keys did not disappoint as they jammed out a sassy psych rock session and quickly found the crowd’s groove. Then The Abigails took the stage and lead singer, Warren Thomas, pulling cues from Hank Williams Jr. and the dark days of Johnny Cash, … View More
